Fear Falls Away: And Other Essay from Hard and Rocky Places
Published in Paperback by University of Arizona Press (August, 1997)
Average review score:

A Naturalist's Journey Takes You With HerJanice Emily Bowers writes from the heart, taking an unflinching look at nature - and herself - reflected in the ecology of Arizona: desert, mountains, peaks and canyons. I felt that I was right along with her on these explorations, and I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy outer - and inner - exploration.

A Field Guide to Rocky Mountain and Southwest Forests
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (15 January, 1999)
Average review score:

Superb Ecological Review of Western HabitatsOnce again, Peterson field guides has provided a user-friendly and comprehensive review of the habitats in the Southwest/Rocky Mountain region of North America. As a graduate of the conservation biology program at Arizona State University, I find this guide to be an invaluable field resource and a practical, detailed survey of the habaitat types most commonly encountered in the western region. The ecology concepts are presented in a clear and organized format and the illustrations effectively convey more challenging concepts. I find Peterson's ecology series to be the choice reference guide for students of ecology and conservation and an enriching counterpart to the range of Peterson's field guides.

Frontier Spirit: The Story of Wyoming
Published in Paperback by Johnson Books (January, 1996)
Average review score:

Outstanding survey of an exciting placeThis book is the best overall history of the state that I have ever read. It is written for the casual reader and colors the many exciting events with vivid descriptors that leave the reader enchanted. Rarely is so much captured in so few pages. This was truely an entertaining read.

Ghost Towns of the Colorado Rockies
Published in Paperback by Caxton Press (01 March, 1991)
Average review score:

Ramblin thru the Unseen RockiesAfter reading this material, I would strongly recommend the avid frontiersman to the novice to take advantage of Brown's testimony to lost and unseen towns that "once were." Brown's attention to detail is above no other; the exquisit portraits he provides makes you shiver in anticipation and almost to a point, turn back in time to actually see how we might have lived during this now lost and not too distant era.
I recommend this book highly.

Glenwood Springs: The History of a Rocky Mountain Resort

Average review score:

A comprehensive, entertaining history of Glenwood Springs.Glenwood Springs - The History of a Rocky Mountain Resort is not the typical history book. All of the information is there - from the formation of the geology up to the present day, along with a wealth of vintage photographs. However, Nelson's easy writing style makes the history a treat to read.

Green Development: Integrating Ecology and Real Estate
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (January, 1998)
Average review score:

Throughly presents sustainable land developmentThis book throughly presents sustainable real estate development. It answers the basic questions of how, what, when, why and who with text and photos illustrating numerous case studies.
It is written for a wide and concerned audience, composed of real estate professionals, financiers and designers. This book is not technical. It is a conceptual book and guides the reader toward sustainable solutions.
This subject is very large and this book is necessarily a summary, which includes recent projects.
This book does not "preach to the choir". It addresses difficult obstacles to the sustainable development paradigm and provides workable solutions.

The Guide and the CEO
Published in Hardcover by Stackpole Books (September, 2001)
Average review score:

A cross between Hemingway and Rick Bass!I've followed Detweiler's stuff, ever since he published The Tree of Life - an overambitious novel, but full of gems. It made me want to read more, so I bought his latest. It's a book for those who love the outdoors. This book is definitely not for someone who is a passive thinker, or for someone who balks at early morning fly fishing for trout. Here is the plot: A down and out fishing guide reels in a nasty CEO (Enron alert). They go at each other, relentlessly. I liked the tension between the two, and at the same time, I liked thinking about the scenery - the great outdoors! Who wouldn't want to escape the daily drudgery to be out in the wilds! The tension builds when the two of them hike to a lake high up in the mountains (think allegory)and try to work out their differences. The CEO is insufferable, but that makes the tension work well. It is clear that the author's heart is with the guide. In sum, it is a book for thinkers and those that love the outdoors. This is Detweiler's niche - writing about the outdoors and about interpersonal conflicts - and I for one can't wait to read his next book.

Hanging the Sheriff: A Biography of Henry Plummer (University of Utah Publications in the American West, Vol 21)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Utah Pr (Trd) (December, 1987)
Average review score:

A truth that is more exciting and intriguing than the myth!Custer was a great military strategist, WA Clark was an honest man, The buffalo were not killed off by the white man, The Indians were murdering godless savages, Henry Plummer was a ringleader of desperadoes that killed 101 people in a year---------NOT! So much for the Hollywood style myths perpetuated by less than thorough historians. This book brilliantly debunks the Henry Plummer myth through careful reasearch, and demonstrates that the Vigilantes killed numerous innocent people (along with a few crooks) with nothing more than a desire to eliminate whoever got in their way. This is a well documented read that for the first time demonstrates that the truth indeed is more fascinating than the myth covering up the mob mentality of the Vigilantes. I grew up in Montana and looked at these Vigilantes as heroes. But after reading this brilliant delivery of the facts.....I find myself somewhat feeling burned by the history writers who self-servingly smeared everyone they hung (after they hung them).......including a verifiable honest hardworkding hispanic in Bannack that the Vigilantes referred to as the "Greaser". Of course there is author bias contained in the book, but behind the style and content of the authors are hard undeniable facts........facts that tell perhaps one of the most fascinating stories in the history of the west--a story untold until these two authors presented it. Read this book if you can get your hands on it. I did, and I am glad I did!! Was Henry Plummer a victim? Well if Custer was a Brillilant military strategist, then he was not. But only you can answer that question.
